Two Delicious Dinners for Four for Less Than $10 per day
Today, we’ll be showing you how to make two delicious home-cooked dinners (that serves a family of four) for less than $10.00 a day!
Using Ajaxo.com, we searched for groceries to make dinner for a family of four. Taking advantage of the sales offered, you can buy groceries for two dinners in one shopping trip. Our dinner consists of meat, vegetables, and a choice of bread/rice/pasta.
Meat:
Chicken - 1 whole chicken about 3 lbs. @ 99 cents per lb. = $2.97
Flank (or Skirt) Steak about 2 lbs. @ $4.99 per lb. = $10.00
Total Cost: $12.97
Vegetables:
Yellow Onions - 4 lbs of Onions @ $0.69/lb. = $2.76
Russet Potatoes (large) - 4 lbs. @ $0.19/lb. = $0.76
Total Cost: $3.52
Bread/Pasta/Rice: (Choose one)
Dreamfields Healthy Carb Pasta - 2 boxes at 13.25 oz. each = $4.00 (2 for $4 special)
Earthgrains 100% Natural Bread - 24 oz. selected varieties @ $1.99 = $1.99
World Classics Rice - 2 lbs. bag at $3.49 per bag = $3.49
TOTAL COST: $18-20.00 (depending on what you choose for bread/pasta/rice)
Dinner 1: Ingredients
- Chicken
- Garlic
- Pepper
- Salt
- Corn starch
- 1 onion
- 2 lbs. of potatoes
- Your choice of bread/pasta/rice
Directions:
1. Clean the chicken. Cut into chunks. See the Youtube clip (there are so many). Find what works for you. It’ll walk you through cutting your chicken. Generally, all the clips leave you with rather large pieces. You can cut them again into smaller chunks. This makes it easier (and faster) to cook and easier to eat/serve.
2. Place the chicken pieces into a bowl. Salt and pepper as you desire. Add half a table spoon of corn starch. Mix well. Add any additional flavoring/seasoning you have in the cupboard for flavor. Try to leave the bone in where you can. Bone will actually give overall dish more flavor as you cook it.
3. Mince the garlic. Clean and cut the onions and potatoes into little chunks.
OPTIONALLY: You may choose to bake your potatoes. Wrap em up in foil. Stick em in the oven. One per person or 2 can share b/c they’re so big. Just as filling.
4. Grab a pot big enough to fit all the chicken in it.
5. Add some oil, no more than what’s necessary to coat the bottom of the pot. Add garlic and onions. Let it simmer until you see the onions caramelizing. Add the chicken. After Close the lid, periodically stir so it doesn’t stick. Add the potatoes (if you chose not to bake them) about 5 minutes in. Add 2 tablespoons of water with the potatoes. Water reacts with juices to help create your sauce. Serve when ready.
6. Your choice of bread/pasta/rice.
Dinner 2: Ingredients
- Flank (or Skirt) Steak
- Garlic
- Pepper
- Salt
- Corn starch
- 1 onion
- 2 lbs. of potatoes
- Your choice of bread/pasta/rice
Directions:
1. Cut your beef into thin strips, add salt n pepper, and some corn starch if you want thick sauce).
2. Mince a little garlic
3. Chop up your onions into chunks or cut em up into slices
4. Oil up your pan, add onions first and cook until the onions start to soften (caramelize). Add in your garlic. Add your beef in. Stir well. Serve when ready
5. Bake potatoes on the side (optional)
6. Your choice of bread/pasta/rice.
2lb bag of rice will serve two dinners (about 1lb. per meal for four people). 2 boxes of pasta for $4.00 can be served a box per meal. TWO meals fit to feed FOUR people for two days! Delicious. The search website helps consumers find weekly special prices on groceries and products in individual cities. Hope everyone’s been staying warm and dry! At first we were worried that the rain was going to keep everyone away. Then it cleared up!
